What to Watch: Fall/Winter Movie Preview

Hello, readers! It’s been a long time since I’ve updated the “What to Watch” section of the site. If you like to check up on this page, sorry for the long delay. I’ve found it difficult to keep things consistently updated, considering the studios have delayed many films in 2020. Don’t worry; there are still movies to watch! Today, I thought we could look at the movie calendar for the rest of the year. Even though so much has been delayed, there are still some things to look forward to!

October 23rd
On The Rocks
Starring: Rashida Jones, Bill Murray
Sofia Coppola is back with her eighth directorial feature. On The Rocks is all about a young mother who reconnects with her famous playboy father on an adventure in New York. The trailer gives off a Lost in Translation vibe. I can’t wait to see Rashida Jones and Bill Murray acting together.
Where to Watch: Apple TV+

November 2
Let Him Go
Starring: Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Lesley Manville, Booboo Stewart
Not even 2020 can stop Kevin Costner from starring in a movie where he rides a horse. I feel like the man is always riding horses. He’s a horse guy. In Let Him Go, Costner stars alongside Diane Lane as a couple grieving their son's loss while trying to rescue their grandson from a dangerous off-the-grid family.

November 24
Hillbilly Elegy
Starring: Amy Adams, Glenn Close
Ron Howard’s newest film, Hillbilly Elegy,, arrives just in time for Thanksgiving to add some dysfunction to your holiday. This preview is giving me major flashbacks to August: Osage County. A lot of people are calling this preview Oscar bait, but I don’t care. I like movies that explore several generations. It looks like Amy Adams and Glenn Close are giving it their all. What will it take to get Amy Adams her Oscar?!
Where to Watch: Netflix

December 4
Mank
Starring: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins
This is my most anticipated movie of the year, without question. Mank could save a painfully mediocre year of movies. David Fincher knew we were suffering and came back from his 6-year film hiatus for Mank. If you don’t know David Fincher, he directed The Social Network, Gone Girl, Zodiac, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. (So every movie I obsessively talk about) Mank follows screenwriter Herman Mancowitz during the process of co-writing Citizen Kane with Orson Wells. I have so much hope for this movie. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Where to Watch: Netflix

Nomadland
Starring: Frances McDormand
Frances McDormand plays a woman who loses everything in the recession and goes on a journey through the American West, living as a nomad. Directed by Chloe Zhao, Nomadland has been getting rave reviews from the festival circuit, with some claiming Frances McDormand could win another Oscar for her performance. I’d assume this will open in limited release theatrically but it will most likely get a streaming release very soon after due to the pandemic.
Where to Watch: In Theaters December 4th, To Be Determined Streaming Service

December 18th
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis
Maybe the Oscars are calling? Chadwick Boseman’s final role will premiere later this year in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film is based on August Wilson’s play of the same name about “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey, her horn player Levee and a tense recording session in Chicago. The film looks to showcase powerhouse performances by both Boseman and Viola Davis.
Where to Watch: Netflix

Coming 2 America
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler
In the sequel to the hit late 80s comedy, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Akeem, who learns he has a son in the United States. He must go back to meet the heir to the throne of Zamunda. There has been no trailer for the sequel yet, but the movie is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on December 18th.
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime

The Father
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Coleman
Both Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman have received early Oscar buzz for their performances in The Father coming out of the festival circuit this year. It follows an aging man who refuses help for his declining health and the relationship with his daughter as his memory fails him.

The Midnight Sky
Starring: George Clooney, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler
Directed and produced by George Clooney, The Midnight Sky is a science fiction drama about a scientist in the arctic trying to stop a group of astronauts from returning home to earth to a global catastrophe. Thank you, George Clooney, for providing us with some uplifting Christmas entertainment in 2020. Just what we needed, a global catastrophe movie.
Where to Watch: Netflix

December 25th
News of the World
Starring: Tom Hanks, Helena Zengel, Michael Covino, Fred Hechinger
Tom Hanks teams up with director Paul Greengrass again after Captain Phillips for News of The World. It’s Hanks's first-ever Western film and looks to be quite promising. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name, it follows a civil war veteran, Jefferson Kyle Kid, as he travels hundreds of miles to deliver news of massive events impacting the world.
Where to Watch: Theaters

Soul
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Phylicia Rashad
Pixar’s latest film was supposed to hit theaters earlier this year, but thanks to COVID was delayed like everything else in the movie industry and life in general. Now the film is headed straight to Disney Plus for a Christmas release. Early reviews are glowingly positive about the film that follows a middle school band teacher who loves jazz. When his passion for music begins to fade, he is transported out of his body to help an infant soul learn about what really matters.
Where to Watch: Disney Plus

Promising Young Woman
Starring: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie
The film’s title is in reference to the Brock Turner case (who was referred to as a “promising young man” despite raping an unconscious woman.) In the film, Carey Mulligan plays Cassandra, a woman traumatized by a past experience who seeks revenge on men like Brock Turner. This looks to be intense and intriguing with Mulligan playing a much more edgy character than she typically portrays.
Where to Watch: Theaters

One Night in Miami
Starring: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr.
Regina King makes her directorial debut with One Night in Miami, a fictional account of a night where Muhammed Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown get together to discuss civil rights and the 1960s.
