The end of the holidays is a tough transition back into the real world. Gone are the days of beautiful Christmas lights, festive music, and holiday parties, and now we say hello to the most boring month of the year, also known as January. While I am no fan of January, the movies provide a nice escape from the end of the holiday season. This weekend there are a surprising number of new films released! Let’s check out what to watch!

1917 Starring: George MacKay, Dean Charles, Chapman, Colin Firth, Daniel Mays
The Golden Globe winner for Best Film Drama follows two British soldiers fighting in World War 1 as they must fight to deliver a message deep in enemy territory. Although it is not all composed of one seamless shot, cinematographer Roger Deakins filmed 1917 to look like it all takes place in one continuous shot. Sound pretty cool! The film has received rave reviews by critics, and it finally releases nationwide this weekend!

Just Mercy
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson
In this emotional drama, civil rights attorney Brian Stevenson works to free death-row prisoner Walter McMillian. It’s sure to contain some excellent acting performances with Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson in the cast.

Like A Boss
Starring: Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, Salma Hayek
I’m gonna be honest, this looks bad. The trailer is not funny and the jokes are terrible. It looks like your typical January comedy release. Who knows, maybe it’s a surprisingly good time? If you want to go out on a limb and try it, that’s your risk.

Underwater
Starring: Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel
This is looking like another typical January movie, except it’s a thriller where some aquatic researchers get trapped underwater after an earthquake. You’d think that’s bad enough, but there’s more! As they try to escape to safety, they discover they’re being hunted by something mysterious underwater! Pretty much everything happening in that script is my personal nightmare so I will be skipping this one.
