As January comes to a close, it’s time to look at what’s releasing in the month’s final weekend. There isn’t anything too flashy showing in theaters to commemorate the end of the month…but there are still a few things to see!
Serenity
This film has been plagued by mystery and production delays. It was originally supposed to be released in October, but the studio pushed it to January. That’s never a good sign, especially with the star power of Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey (two Oscar winners.) If you follow Anne Hathaway on Instagram, you’ve seen her prepare her fans for the negative critical reviews. Both Hathaway and McConaughey have had a difficult time even explaining the plot in interviews. I have yet to see the movie, but word is it’s absolutely crazy.
Cold War
This 3-time Oscar nominee (Best Director, Best Foreign Film, Best Cinematography) tells the story of a music director who falls in love with a singer in 1950’s Communist Poland. It just expanded to wide-release this weekend. It looks to be a haunting and beautiful film.
Stan & Ollie
Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly star as Laurel and Hardy. In the film, the two try to reignite their fading film careers and go on a theater tour of Britain. This is, surprisingly, the first time anyone has done a biographical film on Laurel and Hardy!
The Kid Who Would Be King
Maybe you’re looking for something that your kids can see. If so, The Kid Who Would Be King is out today. It’s the story of a young boy who finds King Arthur’s sword and must stop an evil force from destroying the world. Based on the preview alone, it doesn’t look like anything special, but the movie is actually receiving good reviews!
That’s it for this weekend! What was your favorite movie that you saw in January?
