What to Watch: December 14th

December 14, 2018

It seems that there we’ve been stuck in a bit of a movie lull since Thanksgiving weekend. Barely anything new has been released since then. Don’t worry! This weekend kicks off a slew of new releases that will lead right into the Christmas season! What should you see? That depends on your mood, of course!

Costume Dramas with Character
The Favourite, Mary Queen of Scots
Although both have been floating around limited release for awhile, The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots are finally available in wide release this weekend! Both films follow tales of complex women in history. The Favourite stars Emma Stone, Olivia Coleman, and Rachel Weisz in a twisted high society tale of power, corruption, and manipulation. It was just nominated for 5 Golden Globes and looks to be on its way to a strong awards season. Read my review here.
Mary Queen of Scots stars Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth. A rivalry develops between the two as they attempt to keep their power in Europe.

Cinema Without Leaving the Couch
Roma
Alfonso Cuarón’s (Gravity, Children of Men) latest film, Roma, has been hailed by critics as one of the best films of 2018. The film is Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical look at a year in the life of a middle class family in 1970’s Mexico City. Guess what? You can stream it at home on Netflix starting December 14th. If you’d rather see it on the big screen, there are several theaters screening the film.

The Black Swan is Back
Vox Lux
Natalie Portman’s latest role is an arthouse film that follows the life of a young girl who is flung into the world of pop stardom after a tragic event. Word is the film’s intense look at stardom is reminiscent of Black Swan.

Superhero Season Never Ends!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
In this animated take on Spider-Man, Miles Morales is the web-slinging hero who discovers a multi-verse with different realities. There, he finds that he’s not the only Spider-Man. With Phil Lord (The Lego Movie) as a screenwriter, this one looks like a lot of fun!

You Can’t Catch Clint Eastwood
The Mule
In Clint Eastwood’s latest film, he plays a smuggler working for the Mexican drug cartel. Eastwood directs and stars in the film with an impressive cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia, Dianne Weist, and Michael Peña.

As you can see, there are lots of options at the movies this weekend! Now you just have to decide what to watch!
