What to watch: Thanksgiving Week

November 19, 2018

Thanksgiving is here! If you’re not dashing out the door to go Black Friday shopping, maybe you want to catch a movie with your family this week! There are tons of movies to check out right now, but what should you see? Well, you’re in luck. I’ve come up with a specialized list for the movies you’d probably like best right now.

For the music fans:
A Star Is Born/ Bohemian Rhapsody
Love music? Then check out A Star is Born or Bohemian Rhapsody! A Star Is Born follows the highs and lows of fame as an aging rocker (Bradley Cooper) falls in love with a singer on the rise (Lady Gaga). Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut is brilliant. This is one you need to see on the big screen.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the story of Queen led by a fantastic lead performance from Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. The story itself is not 100% historically accurate, but it is a fun time for any Queen fan.

For the family
The Grinch, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Instant Family
There are several family-friendly options to see right now. If you want to get festive, then go with The Grinch. Another animated option is Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, the sequel to Wreck It Ralph, in theaters on Wednesday. If your family skews towards older tweens and teens or animation just isn’t your thing, there’s Instant Family, a comedy about a couple who become foster parents, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne.

Action only, Please!
Creed II, Widows, Robin Hood
If action is your preferred genre, don’t worry! The cinema has you covered! The sequel to Creed starring Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson premieres on Wednesday. If heists are more your speed, Widows is already out! The film boasts an impressive cast including Viola Davis, Liam Neeson, Collin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, and Robert Duvall. “Neither boxing or heists are for me. I’m more of a fan of movies that take place in the middle ages with that guy from Kingsman as the star.” you’re saying to yourself. Wow, you won’t believe your luck right now. Robin Hood is now in theaters starring Taron Egerton (the guy from Kingsman) and Jamie Foxx. Action movies for everyone!

Isn’t it Oscar season?
At Eternity’s Gate, Beautiful Boy, The Favourite
You can only see A Star is Born so many times before you need to look for other potential award season releases. At Eternity’s Gate stars Willem Dafoe and highlights the life and career of Vincent Van Gough. Beautiful Boy is a haunting portrayal of drug addiction. Steve Carrell and Timothée Chalamet’s performances are unbelievable. The Favourite only opens in New York and L.A. this week. Ugh, limited release is the worst! However, this film is looking like it will be an awards juggernaut.

I desperately need to see a movie about the 1960’s that could get nominated for an Oscar
Wildlife, Green Book
I understand. There comes a time when we all desperately need to see a movie about the 1960’s that could get nominated for an Oscar. Your best options are Wildlife and Green Book. Wildlife is an emotional story of a teen boy who sees his parents marriage slowly fall apart. The film is actor Paul Dano’s directorial debut and features beautiful cinematography and impressive performances from Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Green Book follows a famous black pianist (Don Shirley) and his white chauffer as they tour in the 1960’s South. The film looks to be a major contender in this year’s Oscar race.

I want to see something bad that makes no sense
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Do you love watching a chaotic mess? Do you hate quality cinema? Please go see The Nutcracker and the Four Realms!

That wraps up my ideas on What to Watch for Thanksgiving week. I hope you found a film or two that interests you. Happy Thanksgiving!
