What to Watch: February 5th

February 5, 2021

Happy 2021, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated this section of the website for new content. There have been some major changes in the movie industry, including the news that Warner Brothers will be offering all of their 2021 releases on HBO Max this year. That is both good and bad news. It’s good because we will FINALLY have movies to watch this year. It’s bad because it could mean the inevitable death of movie theaters. So, make of that what you will. Netflix has also announced they will be premiering at least one new movie every weekend this year. Yay for new content! (Let’s hope it’s good.)
What is there to watch this weekend?

Malcolm and Marie
Starring: Zendaya, John David Washington

Directed by Sam Levinson, showrunner of Euphoria, Malcolm and Marie follows a filmmaker and his girlfriend the night that his big movie premieres. Tensions run high, and the two try to determine if their relationship can survive. This was actually filmed over the summer with very strict COVID precautions set for the cast and crew. No more than 12 people were allowed on set at a time, and there was no makeup team or costume designer present. It looks like an acting showcase for the two leads. They’ve both giving great performances lately, so I’m excited to watch this.
Where to watch: Netflix

The Little Things
Starring: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, Jared Leto

HBO Max has their first big premiere of the year with The Little Things starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. That’s 3 Oscar winners in one movie. Somehow Jared Leto is getting award nominations for this movie? Even though it just came out a week ago and he hasn’t been campaigning. Who knows how that happened. Anyways, the movie looks pretty dark considering it’s about a deputy sheriff and detective on the hunt for a serial killer in Los Angeles.
Where to Watch: HBO Max

The Dig
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Carey Mulligan

One of Netflix’s latest releases is The Dig following an archeologist who embarks on the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo. Based on the cast list alone, this seems to be a production with some very impressive British talent so I’m sure it’s something I will watch and enjoy.
Where to Watch: Netflix

TV Shows
WandaVision
Starring: Elisabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Teyonah Parris, Kathryn Han

I really wasn’t sure about this show at first. I love almost anything Marvel puts out, so I was ready to give a show about Wanda Maximoff and Vision a try. Are they my favorite Avengers? No, but that’s okay. The first two episodes seemed very odd and, honestly, a little boring. In the last few weeks, it has really stepped up its game. Wandavision has become mysterious, engaging, and exciting. It’s a show that I look forward to every Friday, considering I have absolutely no clue what will happen next.
Where to Watch: DisneyPlus

Tiger

I don’t know much about golf other than what Troy Bolton taught me in High School Musical 2 while singing Bet on It. Nor did I know much about Tiger Woods outside of the obvious two facts 1. he’s a great golfer. 2. He’s been surrounded by scandal. The two-part Tiger documentary on HBO is an in-depth look at the golfer’s life from childhood to the present day, expanding on what makes him the person he is today.
Where to Watch: HBOMax

The Super Bowl
Oh yeah, the Super Bowl is also this weekend! It’s the Buccaneers led by Tom Brady vs. the Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes. I’m personally rooting for the Chiefs. It’s going to be a good game!
Where to Watch: CBS on Sunday

These are just a few options that you can watch at home this weekend! What movies/shows/documentaries have you been watching lately?
