It’s June which is prime summer blockbuster season! Theaters are still closed but don’t get discouraged! We still have new movies to watch. This weekend there are a few options on Netflix, Disney Plus, and Video On Demand rental to check out. Let’s take a look at what you can see.
Da 5 Bloods
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters
Spike Lee’s latest film follows four African-America Vietnam war vets Paul, Otis, Eddie, and Melvin. The four return to Vietnam to find the remains of their Squad leader and a buried treasure. The film has already received critical praise and early Oscar chatter for the performance of Delroy Lindo.
Where to Watch: Netflix
The King of Staten Island
Starring: Pete Davidson, Marissa Tomei, Maude Apatow
I’m gonna be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Pete Davidson. The Saturday Night Live cast member has made quite a reputation for himself in gossip columns for his personal life. Who could forget the Ariana Grande/Pete Davidson whirlwind romance (oversharing of their personal life) that dominated every entertainment website in 2018?
Written by Davidson and directed by Judd Apatow, The King of Staten Island looks to show audiences another side of the comedian. The film is loosely based on the comedian’s life growing up in Long Island as he deals with the death of his father on 9/11, growing up, and the journey to find a purpose in life.
Where to Watch: Video on Demand
Artemis Fowl
Starring: Ferdia Shaw, Josh Gad, Colin Farrell, Judi Dench
This movie has been on a journey! Artemis Fowl was originally supposed to come out in theaters last summer but was delayed until May of this year. Then, the Coronavirus happened and no theater chain wanted to open to show audiences “a young criminal prodigy hunt down a secret society of fairies.” That is a plot that would make Stanley Kubrick proud. What could Disney do with a movie that had a $159 million budget in the middle of a pandemic? Send it to Disney plus!
It’s looking like skipping the theater was the correct decision because Artemis Fowl currently has a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That hurts. I am still gonna watch it though. I need to know what makes this child a “criminal prodigy” and why he’s hunting down fairies.
