Summer 2019 Movie Preview

It’s that time of year! Summer movie season is almost here. That means every weekend there will be something new and exciting coming to theaters. What should you plan on seeing this summer and what should you skip? Don’t worry! I’ve come up with a summer 2019 movie calendar that includes what I find to be some of the most interesting releases of the season. So sit back, relax, and get ready to find out what you’ll be watching the next few months!

Avengers: Endgame
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth
Endgame is about to hit theaters TOMORROW NIGHT. Technically it’s not summer yet, but this movie will have a massive box office opening and kick off the summer movie season. Who will survive? Who will die? Who will defeat Thanos so I never have to see or hear from him again? There’s so many questions that I need answered. Soon, we will know!
In Theaters: April 26th (really the night of April 25th)

May
Long Shot
Starring: Charlize Theron, Seth Rogen
In this very unbelievable comedy (hence the title), the secretary of state making a run for the presidency (Charlize Theron) falls for a mischievous journalist (Jonah Hill) who she hires to become her speechwriter. Sparks fly and the two become much more than colleagues.
In Theaters: May 3rd

The Hustle
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson
This remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels has been updated with two female leads. This time around the con women are teaming up to take down the men who have wronged them.
In Theaters: May 10th

Tolkein
Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins
A look at the world of famed Lord of the Rings author, J.R.R. Tolkein including his life with family and friends and the inspiration behind his renowned writing.
In theaters: May 10th

The Sun is Also A Star
Starring: Yara Shahidi, Charles Melton, Faith Logan
In this film full of CW stars, a young girl living in New York City falls in love, only to face deportation hours later. Honestly, I’m just glad a teen romance movie is being released that isn’t a Fault in Our Stars rip-off. This actually sounds like an original idea!
In Theaters: May 17th

The Souvenir
Starring: Honor Swinton Byrne, Richard Ayode, Tilda Swinton
This is the first starring role for Tilda Swinton’s daughter. (At least people are saying that. You never know. It could just be Tilda Swinton in another disguise.) Needless to say, it looks interesting. The film takes place in the 80’s, when a film student gets involved with an untrustworthy man.
In Theaters: May 17th

Aladdin
Starring: Mena Moussaud, Will Smith, Naomi Scott
Disney’s updated re-telling of the animated classic. This version will be directed by Guy Ritchie so there’s sure to be several uptempo action sequences. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the look of Will Smith’s Genie. Many people think the CGI looks very strange. There are just some things that work better with animation, but I’m interested to see how the movie pulls it off.
In Theaters: May 24th

Rocketman
Starring: Taron Egerton, Richard Madden, Jamie Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard
Fresh off of stepping in to direct Bohemian Rhapsody, Dexter Fletcher has directed Rocketman, a fantastical account of Elton John’s rise to stardom from his childhood year’s to becoming a superstar. It will be interesting to see if this film has the same amount of success as Bohemian Rhapsody. Impressively, instead of lip synching, Taron Egerton did his own singing while playing Elton John to make the portrayal more authentic.
In Theaters: May 31st

June
Late Night

Starring: Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling wrote the screenplay for this film about a late night talk show host (Emma Thompson) who is on the verge of getting fired. When a young joke writer is brought in (played by Kaling) to push the show in a new direction, can the host’s job be secured?
In Theaters: June 7th

Men in Black: International
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson
It’s time for another Men in Black movie, but this time around it’s not Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones chasing down aliens. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson star as members of the Men in Black International division who must hunt down a mole within the organization. Fans of Thor: Ragnarok know that Hemsworth and Thompson had excellent chemistry as Thor and Valkeyrie. Hopefully it carries over into this film as well.
In Theaters: June 14th

The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Starring: Danny Glover, Jimmy Falls, Jonathon Majors
A huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival, this film tells the story of a man who searches for home in a city that seems to have left him behind
In Theaters: June 14th

Toy Story 4
Starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Patricia Arquette
Pixar can’t seem to let Toy Story go with yet another addition to the franchise. This time around, a new toy named Forky joins the gang and a road trip with old and new friends reveals what it takes to be a toy. I’m sure there will be plenty of emotional moments as there are with all Pixar movies.
In Theaters: June 21st

Yesterday
Starring: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon
Yesterday is about a musician who wakes up from an accident only to discover no one has ever heard The Beatles music. This is a movie musical directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs) and written by Richard Curtis (About Time, Love Actually) featuring Beatles music… sounds pretty perfect to me!
In Theaters: June 28th

July
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal
This movie does have a plot about Spider-Man traveling to Europe, but the only thing I care about is the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal is involved. His character is called Mysterio and is supposed to wear a fishbowl helmet to be mysterious or something, but that really just bums me out. I hope the costume department doesn’t make him do that. I want to see his face, not a fishbowl.
In Theaters: July 5th

The Farewell
Starring: Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin
After their grandmother is diagnosed with terminal cancer, a Chinese family decides to keep it a secret from the woman and schedule a large family wedding to gather together before she dies. The film was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and is said to contain a strong performance by lead actress, Awkwafina.

The Lion King
Starring: Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen
Disney’s live action adaption of The Lion King will hit theaters this July. It promises quite a talented voice cast and very impressive visual effects from the previews so far. The film is directed by Jon Favreau who also directed 2016’s The Jungle Book.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie
I still can’t believe these 3 actors are appearing in a movie together. This is going to be one of the biggest movie events of the summer. If you haven’t seen one of the many posts I’ve made about it, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is about a washed up actor and his stunt double in the changing Hollywood landscape of 1969.
In Theaters: July 26th

August
Where’d You Go Bernadette?
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Billy Crudup, Kristin Wiig
Bernadette is the story of a woman who suddenly disappears without explanation. In order to find her, Bernadette’s family goes on an adventure to figure out where she may have gone. The biggest mystery surrounding this movie is will it actually be released in August? That’s debatable. It has been delayed a total of 3 times since it was originally announced.
In Theaters: August 9th

The Kitchen
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish
In 1978, 3 housewives take the Irish mafia’s business into their own hands when their mobster husbands go to prison.
In Theaters: August 9th
