After a year of controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes were not broadcast on TV this year. They also did not have an audience due to an increase in covid cases. I guess they didn’t want to try a virtual award show since that didn’t go over well in previous years. The HFPA wanted a little chaos, so they announced the winners of 2021 in a room by themselves, tweeting the results out along the way. Does any of this matter if it wasn’t televised and there was no audience? You would think not. However, the Golden Globes can give us an idea of how the Oscars may go in many ways. So, let’s take a look at the winners.
Best Picture Drama- The Power of the Dog
If this ends up winning Best Picture at the Oscars, I will be disappointed. Sorry if you love this movie but it’s not my thing. It feels the filmmakers saw There Will Be Blood and thought “how can we make something like that but take all of the intrigue out of it?”
An Oscar win would alienate mainstream audiences like never before simply because it’s so dull.
Best Picture, Comedy or Musical - West Side Story
This is my pick for Best Picture of the year. No surprise here because it’s a musical. Steven Spielberg brought a classic musical back to the big screen and breathed new life into it. As one of the seven people who saw it in theaters and tried to save it from being a box-office flop, I can tell you it is worth watching.
West Side Story
Best Actor Drama -Will Smith, King Richard
Will Smith has been receiving rave reviews for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena, since the film’s release in November. It’s an excellent portrayal in a crowd-pleaser of a film. I could see him going all the way to Oscar glory for this one.
Best Actress, Drama - Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos
This one is a bit of a surprise considering Kristen Stewart was in the same category as Nicole Kidman for Spencer and she has previously swept almost every other critic's group/awards show up to this point. Nicole Kidman’s performance as Lucille Ball came out late in the game but is memorable. The Globes love to award an actress who is playing another actress and they also love Nicole Kidman (who doesn’t? She is the spokeswoman for AMC theaters, after all! Where heartbreak feels good!)
For the Oscars, I would say keep an eye out for Kristen Stewart and Olivia Coleman in The Lost Daughter (who always seems to come out of nowhere to win.)
Best Actor, Musical or Comedy- Andrew Garfield, Tick Tick…Boom!
2021 was the year of Andrew Garfield. He had roles in Mainstream, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Tick, Tick…Boom! (and maybe something else as well) As a fan of his since The Social Network (which he should have won awards for), it’s exciting to see him get recognition for his acting ability. His performance as Jonathan Larsson in Tick Tick Boom is excellent. I think the Oscar could ultimately come down to Will Smith vs. Andrew Garfield. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
Best Actress, Musical or Comedy- Rachel Zegler, West Side Story
This is Rachel Zegler’s first Golden Globe win as West Side Story is her breakout role. Could she gain some Oscar momentum moving forward? Time will tell.
Best Supporting Actor -Cody Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog
Best Supporting Actress - Ariana DeBose, West Side Story
Best Director - Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
The Power of the Dog. Directed by Jane Campion
Best Screenplay, Kenneth Branagh, Belfast
Best Original Score - Hans Zimmer, Dune
Best Original Song - Billie Eilish, No Time To Die
Best Animated Motion Picture - Encanto
Best Animated Feature: Encanto
Best Foreign Language Film -Drive My Car
